411 on Termites

Whats the 411 on termites? Realtors will be the first to tell you, ” It’s not if, but when you will get termites.” That being said, I wanted to give you some pointers to help reduce the conditions conducive for termites in and around your home.

Termites need moisture in order to survive. You can help reduce your chances of getting termites buy reducing water around the base of your home. Always plant vegetation at least 18 inches away from the base of your home. The moisture from watering plants too close to your home gives sufficient conditions for termites to thrive. Also, make sure there is proper grading around your home. What is proper grade you ask? It is having the dirt or gravel level slope away from the base of your house. This will help channel water away from your home should it rain. This will also help reduce pooling at the base of your home, which will also invite mosquitoes to breed.

Keep firewood, leaves and other cellulose materials away from the base of your home. These are a direct food source for the termites. It is best to keep firewood off the ground and away from the home. Firewood is also a perfect environment to harbor other insects, black widow spiders, and scorpions, other creepy crawlies that you do not want near your home.

Lastly, Have your home inspected annually for the presence of termites. Stormin’ Norman Termite and Pest Control never charges to have your home inspected for termites. Even if you’re not a current customer. Should you have any questions regarding termites or any other pest, give us a call.
