Will Cockroaches Inherit the Earth?

Will cockroaches inherit the earth? They have a much higher tolerance to radiation than humans. Cockroaches are an unusual specimen in the bug world. Some can live without food while remaining active for up to 30 days. They eat the oddest things and can survive on a minuscule amount of food. Some cockroaches can continue to function after decapitation, even the severed head is able to move its antennae for up to an hour later.

German Cockroaches have wings but seldom fly. Female German cockroaches produce more eggs per ootheca (egg sack) than most other cockroaches allowing this roach to quickly infest your home. This species breeds rapidly and are common in kitchens and bathrooms. They also infest electrical appliances and hide and lay eggs in televisions, electrical outlets, kitchen appliances like stoves, toasters (yummy crumbs), and coffee pots. This cockroach will take up residence inside a refrigerator in an advanced infestation. In fact, a German cockroach infestation can become so severe they will take over an entire dwelling. If no food is found they will eat glue, toothpaste, and soap.

The American Cockroach is also called the Sewer roach or the Palmetto bug in the eastern United States. It is the largest of the domestic roach species at 1.6 inches long. Females do not carry their egg sack but will glue it to a suitable location as soon as it forms. This cockroach will eat anything from decaying matter to the waste of humans and animals.  They also eat their own poop. Leftover food droppings and sweets are their favorites, but they will eat ANYTHING. One customer found an American Cockroach holding onto an Agave syrup bottle in her cupboard. It did not scurry away but held on tight. She had to remove it with a shop vacuum.  They can also live for months without food or water. These roaches can come in through drains or gain access to your home from any water source. The American Cockroach can slip through sewer cracks and stroll over to your house to search for goodies.

Brown-Banded Cockroaches are smaller than most other cockroaches. Males are light brown and have long slender bodies. Their wings cover the entire abdomen.  Males often fly when disturbed. Females are darker brown and rounded, with shorter wings. Brown-Banded Cockroaches like dry, hot environments, require less water and are found in living rooms and bedrooms. These cockroaches easily enter your home through cracks and under doorways. And are typically found away from food areas. They live underneath chairs and tables, behind wall decorations, pictures, and loose wallpaper, in closets, under or inside upholstered furniture. These roaches love to lay eggs in warm places such as electronic devices like a flatscreen TV, cable boxes, video game consoles and more.

Domestic Cockroaches will eat whatever they can find. In the absence of your food, they enjoy chomping on the adhesive backing of stationery, books, and wallpaper paste. House dust containing cockroach feces and body parts can trigger allergic reactions and asthma in certain individuals. If this is not creepy enough to know, Cockroaches pick up disease-causing bacteria on their legs and later deposit them on foods that we eat. They can carry about 33 diseases including e Coli, plague, salmonella, Dysentery, and can also give you food poisoning.
